Our Story

The vision for Ken Sargent House began in 2007, when former City of Grande Prairie Mayor and Rotarian Elmer Borstad shared a simple but powerful idea: create a home away from home for families travelling to Grande Prairie for medical care.

What started as a conversation quickly became a shared commitment. The belief that this vision should belong to the entire community brought together all four Rotary Clubs in Grande Prairie, leading to the creation of the Rotary Clubs of Grande Prairie Wellness Society in 2016. With the generous support of Grande Prairie Regional College, now Northwestern Polytechnic, a one acre site near the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital was secured and the foundation for the project was laid.

In an extraordinary demonstration of leadership and belief in the project, the Rotary Clubs committed $4 million to Ken Sargent House, the single largest gift ever made by these clubs. This historic contribution helped transform the original vision into a reality with lasting impact.

Driven by the dedication of Rotarians and community champions, the project continued to grow, both in scope and impact. With the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation joining as the operating partner in 2023, the original plan for a single-storey building evolved into a two-storey home designed to welcome even more families in need.

Today, Ken Sargent House stands as a reflection of what is possible when a community comes together with compassion, purpose, and the shared belief that no family should face medical care alone.

A Thank You To Ken Sargent

The Ken Sargent House is named for Ken Sargent, who has personally donated $2M to the project already.

Ken was born in Grande Prairie on December 15, 1942. He began working for his father Bill as a young boy, washing cars and pumping gas. Ken took ownership of his father’s automobile business in 1969, before buying and running a separate dealership in Dawson Creek and also building and leasing several commercial buildings.

Ken began a Rotary Chapter, served on the hospital and airport boards, and gave much of his time to numerous other charitable entities. Ken has always believed in giving back to worthwhile causes that positively impact the well-being of northern Alberta.

Having been on the hospital board, Ken understands the needs of the hospital foundation and healthcare across this region. He is always happy to help because he loves northern Alberta – born and raised here, it is forever in his heart.
